Attending a Disney Resort is an incredible experience, regardless of what age you are! We first decided to take a day trip to the resort on a Sunday in late October of 2018, and we LOVED every minute of our time there! So much so that we have actually been back multiple times. As I was residing in Shanghai, this became a fun spot to go to, and it’s honestly so worth it to go! I had only been to Disneyland in the USA when I was a kid, and so going to Shanghai Disney for their Halloween event was my first experience attending a park internationally. The first time we went, we lucked out as the park wasn’t all that busy; we had great weather, and as a bonus, it was Halloween-themed!

Does Shanghai Disney Celebrate Halloween? (Dates & Event Overview)
Halloween is a huge event at Shanghai Disney, and we had an absolute blast going there during the spooky season! The special event runs for just about the whole month of October, and the decorations are simply amazing. We loved seeing all of the Halloween decorations all over the park, with a highlight being the entrance, where they made the Halloween Mickey Mouse with the flowers! (see photo above). The park food was Halloween-themed; there were pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns throughout the park, and there was even a Villains Parade!
It is worth noting that there is the national Golden Week holiday in China, which takes place from October 1st to October 7th in 2026. This means that the park will be VERY BUSY during that first week of October. If you can, try to book your time at Shanghai Disney for after the holiday.
Is Shanghai Disney Worth Visiting?
Without a doubt, YES! Shanghai Disney is so fun, and I really enjoyed going. As I lived in the Shanghai area, I actually went multiple times, including both the Halloween and Christmas seasons. The decor for these two events in particular is so amazing, and I loved the holiday spirit it added to an already magical park.
Even without a seasonal event, I do think it’s still worth going. However, if you can, I’d recommend going during the Halloween event as it was truly the BEST!

The park hours of operation do change slightly depending on when you are planning to attend.

October 8th – November 1st: 8:30am – 9:30pm
Be sure to check the Shanghai Disney Calendar to see when the park is open. The times are only available a few weeks in advance, so you’ll want to double-check the times closer to your entry date!
Halloween Ticket Options: Regular Admission vs Night Pass
Since we were residing in Shanghai at the time, we actually bought our tickets on site. Ticket pricing changes between weekdays and weekends, and there are different types of tickets that you can purchase.
For a One-Day General Admission Ticket for adults, it can range between 539 CNY and 659 CNY (80-98 USD approx.) depending on the dates you are looking to go to the park. You can go to their website to find out more about the different ticketing options and packages that are available. I have seen packages advertised, including a Dream-Day Package, Parent-Child Bundle Ticket, and a couples 1-Day Ticket Package. These packages have special pricing and could certainly be the way to go, based on your group!
Pro-Tip: Booking with Foreign Credit Cards
If booking with a foreign credit card, you may want to purchase via Trip.com or Klook. Although you can certainly try purchasing on the main website, foreign credit cards don’t always work. Both Trip.com and Klook platforms offer multiple ticketing prices depending on the ticket package you are looking for.
During the Halloween season, the resort does offer a night pass, where you can attend the park from 5:00pm until closing. This ticket will only cost you about 370 CNY (55 USD) and will also come with an 85 CNY (13 USD) meal ticket to use at certain food places within the park.
Shanghai Disney Best Time to Visit for Halloween & How Busy It Gets
The best time to visit Shanghai Disney for Halloween would be after the Golden Week holiday. If you can, I’d also try to go during a weekday in order to avoid a larger weekend crowd. While the park will still be busy anytime you go, a non-holiday weekday will be your best choice.
Towards the end of October would be ideal, as the rush to see new Halloween decorations at the beginning of the month will have subsided (my guess haha). We went the last Sunday in October, and the park wasn’t very busy. The longest wait for a ride was only about 40 minutes! However, it will depend on the day you go and how busy the park is. Since we were living in Shanghai, we also went on a different day that was rainy, as a spur-of-the-moment decision. The park was pretty empty, and we had almost no line that day for some of the more popular rides!
Must-See Halloween Entertainment: The Villains Parade & Night Show
The highlight of the Halloween event at Shanghai Disney easily came in the evening. The Villains Parade was by far the best experience of the night! We loved the fun and spooky music and seeing the Disney villains up close, such as Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty and Hades from Hercules. The parade featured dancers, the classic Disney characters in Halloween outfits, and it truly added to the fun and light-hearted spirit of Halloween. The Villains Parade starts around 7:00 pm, and there is a large crowd along the parade path!
To close out the evening, you’ll definitely want to stay for the Disney Castle fireworks and light show! This show starts at 8:30 pm, and it lasts approximately 20 minutes. It’s so worth it to stay and see it. You’ll see snippets of Disney characters on the Disney Castle! The light show is amazing to watch, the fireworks are spectacular, and it’s the perfect way to end your day at Shanghai Disney!
Top Shanghai Disney Rides to Prioritize During Halloween (My Top Choices)
Shanghai Disney is full of amazing rides, and I love the different sections they have inside the park! Although each ride can cater to a different audience (those who like rollercoasters vs spinning rides), I’ll share my top favourites and a new ride I can’t wait to experience!
1. Tron Lightcycle Power Run (Tied for 1st Place)
Step into the future and aboard your own lightcycle on the Tron Lightcycle Power Run rollercoaster. This is tied for first place for being my favourite ride at Shanghai Disney. This ride felt like a whirlwind adventure as you zipped along the track in the Tomorrowland area of the park. I loved the futuristic glow the track had, and you’ll even reach a speed of up to 60km/h!
2. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Tied for 1st Place)
The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is also tied for 1st place and is such a fun ride. This ride is located in the Fantasyland area of the park. The roller coaster cars look like wooden mine cars that you’ll climb into for your mine tunnel adventure, and the cars sway from side to side throughout the ride. This ride usually has a long waiting time, so plan accordingly if you want to go here!
3. The Hunny Pot Spin
The Hunny Pot Spin ride is so cute with all of the honey jars spinning around. While I am one to experience motion sickness, my particular honey jar was hardly spun as I embraced the phrase “just along for the ride” haha. There is a wheel in the middle of each honey jar, and the riders have the ability to spin their honey pot as fast or as slow as they like. The ride is located in the Fantasyland area of the park. It’s a fun Winnie the Pooh ride with cute decor and certainly worth a visit!
4. Pirates of the Caribbean Battle for the Sunken Treasure
The Pirates of the Caribbean Battle for the Sunken Treasure ride is a fan favourite and easily considered a “must”. You’ll board a boat holding 30 people, following Jack Sparrow’s attempt to steal Davy Jones’ treasure. You’ll speed up, slow down, and move around in this fun and adventurous ride. Look for this ride in the Treasure Cove area of the park.
5. Soaring Over the Horizon
The Soaring Over the Horizon ride is really fun and a great adventure for families. It’s located in the Adventure Isle section of the park, and it’s held indoors. You’ll climb aboard a flight simulator where you’ll be lifted into the air, making you feel like you are gliding! You’ll feel the wind around you as you follow along the adventure to and around global landmarks on the large screen in front.
6. Zootopia: Hot Pursuit (New Addition since 2023!)
While I haven’t been to this particular attraction, this is definitely one to go to! In the Zootopia: Hot Pursuit ride, you’ll become immersed in the land of Zootopia, where you’ll join in a police chase in an attempt to rescue Gazelle! It looks like such a fun and unique ride, and I hope I get the chance to go on it one day! This ride is located in the new Zootopia area and is the newest addition to Shanghai Disney!
How to Beat the Lines: Early Entry Pass vs. Disney Premier Access (Express Pass)
You have two options to help ease your time waiting in line for rides: the Early Entry Pass and the Disney Premier Access Pass.
The Early Entrance Pass
The Early Entrance Pass allows you to enter the park 1 hour before the opening time. This pass can also only be purchased a maximum of 9-10 days prior to your ticket date to Shanghai Disney.
If the park opens at 8:30 am, then you will be permitted to enter the park at 7:30 am. With that said, if you truly want to maximize your chance of being the first in line for specific rides, you’ll want to line up even before 7:30 am. I’ve seen others online saying that people start arriving 90 minutes before 7:30 am to be the first in line for particular rides.
To my knowledge, the Zootopia area is not included in the Early Entrance Pass, as it only pertains to select rides in the Adventure Isle, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Toy Story Land, and Treasure Cove areas. However, I have seen people online mentioning that they were able to access the Zootopia area with the Early Entrance Pass (this, of course, is not guaranteed).
The Disney Premier Access Pass (DPA)
The DPA allows you to bypass the regular line and instead join a fast-track line to enter the ride. You also have a choice between which type of DPA pass you want. You can purchase a DPA pass for a single ride, or you can purchase DPA passes in bundles of 3, 6, and more! The DPA pass is available for both a variety of rides as well as shows!

Now, there are a few things to note with this DPA Pass:
- You scan your ticket into the Shanghai Disney App and then select the DPA pass you want
- You will be given a particular starting time that you can use your pass
- The pass is available from your starting time until the park closes
- You can only use the pass one time. For example, if you purchase the 1-ride package for the Zootopia: Hot Pursuit ride, your fast pass expires after you have used it once. You cannot join the fast track line again; instead, you’ll have to join the regular line after using your DPA
- You CAN purchase the pass on the same day while you are already inside the park
- Tickets are subject to availability

How to Pay at Shanghai Disney: Payment Methods
When purchasing items such as food and souvenirs inside the park, you can pay using your foreign credit card, cash or Alipay. If paying by credit card, it’s highly recommended to have your physical card with you, as Apple Pay (mobile wallet) may not work.
People have also recommended setting up Alipay with your international credit card as a way to ensure smooth payment in Shanghai, especially while travelling outside the park. Alipay and We Chat are the most common methods of payment in China. Using these apps, you simply scan the QR code and the payment is linked to your Alipay and We Chat accounts. With this in mind, it may be helpful to consider setting up Alipay before travelling within China.

The Shanghai Disney App is the ultimate tool and your go-to resource while exploring Shanghai Disney. My favourite feature is that it shows you the live waiting time at each ride. This was essential for us as we didn’t purchase any fast lane/early entrance passes, and so this helped us navigate the order in which we rode the rides.
You can also order your food through the mobile app, making it convenient to pre-purchase your food and avoid wait lines for food.
Another great feature inside the Shanghai Disney App is that you can upload your park tickets and then purchase the Early Entrance Pass and/or the Disney Access Pass. This will help bypass lines and make the most of your time inside the park.
How to Get to the Shanghai Disney Park
The Shanghai Disney Resort is somewhat close to the Shanghai Pudong Airport. You can get there quite easily on the metro on Line 11 at the Disney Resort Station. We took the metro on the way there, and then decided to take a taxi after the park closed. The park is only a 5-10 minute walk from the station, and it’s best to use Exit 1 from the metro.
Alternatively, you can also download the Didi Taxi app, as it’s one of the go-to ride-sharing apps in China. The language is also in English, making it easy to navigate and book a ride-share taxi to and from the park.

1. Toy Story Hotel
The Toy Story Hotel just might make the perfect place to stay if you want the full Disney experience. Each room immerses you in the Toy Story movie, where everything from the wallpaper, murals, bedding, and even slippers is Toy Story themed! They offer international cuisine in the dining areas, and there is also a play area for kids as well. I also saw online that they have Disney characters in the lobby every day at 6:00 pm! How amazing is that??
One of the best parts about staying at the Toy Story Hotel is its proximity to the Shanghai Disney park! It’s only about a 10-minute walk, so you’ll be at the park in no time. This would be ideal for families looking for a place close by, a fun themed hotel for kids, and who don’t want the fuss of booking taxis or taking transit to the park.

2. Shanghai Disneyland Hotel
The Shanghai Disneyland Hotel is another perfect choice if you are looking to stay at a Disney Hotel with easy park access! The rooms are decorated with Disney themes such as a Donald Duck-themed room and an Ice Magic (Frozen)-themed room! The furniture is beautifully decorated with large wooden wardrobes and headboards, with Disney-themed finishing touches!

The Novotel Shanghai Clover can certainly be a great place if you are looking for a hotel close by, but don’t necessarily want to stay at the resort. They offer King rooms or Deluxe Twin rooms, making it perfect for couples or friends going to the park. The hotel overall is very modern, with sophisticated room furnishings and has an amazing rooftop pool!
Another great feature of this hotel is how close it is to the Disney resort! The hotel offers free shuttles to the Disney park as well as to the airport. You can also get a 5-minute taxi or ride the metro 1 stop (on line 11). This is a very convenient hotel to stay at if you don’t necessarily want to stay at the park itself.

Exploring Shanghai Disney during Halloween: My Personal Experience
Shanghai Disney is such a fun experience, and honestly for all ages. I have been a few different times, and by far my favourite experience is always during the Halloween season. Now, I haven’t ever purchased an Early Entrance Pass or the DAP, as when I went, the longest wait time was around 40 minutes. As I was travelling with friends, this wasn’t a big deal for us, and the wait times didn’t feel so long. If I was tight on time and wanted to truly maximize my time, then I would consider getting a DAP for a few rides.
The rides at Shanghai Disney Resort were SO FUN, and as someone who has become prone to motion sickness as an adult (yay me), I still found them very enjoyable. In fact, my top two favourite rides were the TRON Lightcycle Power Run and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller coasters!
Enjoying Halloween Seasonal Food at Shanghai Disney
All over the park, you’ll find many shops to eat at! Our favourite was the Sichuan-style nachos with spiced chicken and potato chips found at the Pixar Toy Story Land! Since it was also Halloween, the park offered special Halloween dishes and snacks! We found out about these special features from the pamphlet located at the information booth! Embracing the Halloween Event at Shanghai Disney
Combining the Disney magic and the Halloween holiday spirit makes it truly special when attending Shanghai Disney in October. I think my favourite part of all was watching the Villains Parade in the evening. It just added such a fun atmosphere, and it’s truly a unique event to enjoy in the fall season. I would easily go back to Shanghai Disney and especially visit the new Zootopia addition!
The life-size statues, Disney-themed park decorations, and the themed food just made for an overall amazing day. Truth be told, you can’t go wrong with either holiday. They are both so fun in their own way. While I personally preferred the Halloween season, the Christmas season was pretty special too!
