La Paz was one of the most unique cities that we had ever been to. I loved the mountainous landscape with hills of houses everywhere in between. We did have to get used to the elevation, which wasn’t the easiest, but we honestly loved our time there. I didn’t really know what to expect from the food scene in La Paz, but I quickly learned how vast the food scene was, and how elevated (no pun intended) the culinary scene here really is.

Ru and I stayed here for 2 weeks in the fall of 2026, and spent our evenings trying out new restaurants almost every single night. The food here is SOOO good, and there are many high-end restaurants that you don’t want to miss. I would definitely spend at least a few days in La Paz in order to truly take the city in, explore the amazing sights, and of course eat this amazing Bolivian cuisine! If you are wondering where to eat in La Paz, Bolivia, then this is the guide for you!

Our 7 Favourite Authentic Bolivian Restaurants in La Paz, Bolivia

1. Popular Cocina Boliviana (The Best Lunch Spot)

Hours: 12:00-2:30pm Mon-Sat, Sun (closed)
Location

Our accommodation host had first informed us of Popular Cocina Boliviana, so it was always on our list. When we started looking into going here, we quickly realized that it’s only open for lunchtime on weekdays! So of course, we timed when we could get there, and we are sure glad that we did. We arrived about an hour after opening (no reservations), and we were lucky to get a table.

They have a unique fixed menu, with only a few options to choose from for your appetizer, main dish, and dessert. They also provide a free juice with your meal as well.

Every dish is honestly a showstopper! They are all decorated so beautifully on the plate, and of course they taste amazing. We actually sat next to a serving station, where we saw the staff up close plating everything with such detail.

When we finished our meal and left the restaurant, there was even a waiting line! Do yourself a favour and go here!!

2. Paceña La Salteña (The Best Breakfast Snack)

Hours: 8:30am – 2:30pm Daily
Location

’ll be honest, the place I visited the most was easily Paceña La Salteña. I went here maybe one…two…three…four…Times? Yes. I know what you’re thinking. I may have been obsessed with Salteñas, but it’s for good reason. They are SO GOOD! They are the perfect morning snack to get you started on your day. Maybe places that specialize in selling salteñas are actually only open until the mid-afternoon, so you gotta plan your day accordingly.

Salteñas are similar to an empanada, but the bread is a corn bread and inside is a soup consistently filled with meat and veg. Our go-tos were the pollo picante and the carne picante (though they weren’t actually that spicy). I could eat these everyday they are that tasty.

Be warned that you’ll probably get the soup all over your hands by the time you are done eating, so you’ll probably want to eat over a plate/dish. But yes, do yourself a favour and  EAT HERE!

3. Ancestral (Amazing Fine Dining)

Hours: Tues-Thurs 7-10pm, Fri & Sat 12-3:30 & 7-10pm, Sun 12-3:30pm, Mon (closed)
Location

Ancestral was an incredible dining experience that we honestly LOVED. This restaurant was the farthest one that we went to, but honestly it was so worth it. The restaurant has a relaxing lounge-type feel, and there was even a lovely fireplace near our table. The staff were incredibly kind, and the overall atmosphere felt sophisticated and warm.

Shortly after being seated, we were served bread and a pâté spread, which was really tasty. We ordered 3 different appetizers and 2 mains, with drinks as well. Our appetizers all came out first, which included the Grilled Artichoke Hearts, Pulled Pork Lettuce Taquito, and Grilled Mushroom and Fresh Trout Ceviche. Honestly, they were all amazing. I couldn’t believe how great everything tasted, and we were already getting full before our main courses were coming out!

For our main course, I ordered the Crispy Chicken Breast and Ru ordered the. While he didn’t love his dish (he liked it, but he was deciding on another dish and wished he had ordered that), I certainly loved mine. I could only get through about half of it, though, and had to pack it for home. Our experience was very, very good, and I highly recommend you go here!

4. Mi Chola (12-Course Tasting Menu)

Hours: Mon-Sat 6-10pm, Sun (closed)
Location

We were absolutely stunned after having dinner at Mi Chola in La Paz. We had read great reviews online about the set menu, but we didn’t really know what to actually expect, as the menu isn’t listed. I contacted them about booking a reservation and then answered questions about food intolerances. Before I knew it, we arrived about an hour later for our last-minute reservation, and I can’t believe we didn’t come sooner!

Mi Chola offers a 12-course menu tasting and optional wine pairing. They also asked us if we preferred a Spanish-speaking or English-speaking person to explain what each course was about. Although we do know a little Spanish, we asked for an English-speaking waitress to help us understand each dish.

The presentation of each dish was incredible. Our waitress was extremely kind and patient, and explained every dish to us and its connection to Bolivia. We were impressed not only by the unique presentation, but also by the thoughtfulness that went into each dish.

We added cocktails and a glass of wine to our meal tastings, and it was honestly one of the best meal experiences that I have ever had. Everything tasted amazing; they were able to accommodate my food pickiness with ease, and I truly loved this experience!

5. La Rufina (The Best Not-So-Hidden Gem)

Hours: Mon-Sat 12-10pm, Sun (closed)
Location

When looking at great places to dine, La Rufina kept popping up, so of course we had to give it a try! We were asked if we had a reservation (which we did not), but luckily we were still able to get a table. We went a bit early around 6 pm, but when we left close to 8 pm, it was very busy!

They had a 3-course special menu which consisted of a fried yucca & meat patty appetizer, a roast chicken main dish with sweet potatoes, and a cupauçu cream & meringue dessert. My appetizer and main dish were amazing and honestly so good! While I personally didn’t love the dessert, Ru helped me to finish it, and he actually enjoyed it more than me.

Ru had the Anticucho to start, which is a flame-grilled beef heart dish, and the Pique main dish. The Pique had beef tenderloin with sausage, onion, tomato, cheese and more! He really enjoyed his dishes, with the highlight being the Anticucho.

To complement our dinner, we each had a cocktail: a cocalero mule and the chuflay. It was such a great dinner. The staff were so friendly, and we had a great time. It’s so worth it to go here – so just go.

6. Manq’a Restaurante (Our Go-To Spot)

Hours: Mon-Sat 10:30am-9pm, Sun 12-3:30pm
Location

Manq’a Restaurante was the first place that we ate at in La Paz, and wow, did it ever set the bar high! We didn’t realize initially, but the upper level is a part of a food hall area with multiple restaurants to dine at. It’s a really neat atmosphere and was fairly busy as well. We loved the food that we had, and this was our first taste of traditional Bolivian cuisine!

Ru tried the Uchu lawa tradicional, which is a cream dish with cheese, bean cream, and wrapped potatoes. This dish also came with a sizzling stone that they added, which made the cream base bubble!

I had the Sopa de mani, which is a traditional peanut soup. It was so tasty that I’m already planning on coming back! We both loved our dishes and honestly think that it’s a great spot to dine at and enjoy the local cuisine!

We actually came back here again and ordered even more off of the menu. This place is so good that it really felt like our go-to spot. While the dishes don’t have huge portions, everything was filling, and we loved dining here!

7. YATI Restaurant Café Bar

Hours: Mon-Sat 9am-10pm, Sun 3-10pm
Location

We really enjoyed our time at YATI Restaurant Café Bar. While we ordered a couple of apps, including the peanut soup, we complemented them each with a glass of wine. It was really tasty, and the atmosphere is relaxed, chilled, and has a low-key vibe. It’s right near DT Brew House, and these places are right near the Witches Market – so it can’t be beat!

8. Gustu (On Our List)

Hours: Tues-Sat 12:30-2:30pm & 6-9pm, Sun & Mon (closed)
Location

While I’ll be honest, we never had the chance to go to Gustu. This is the one restaurant we keep talking about. Our accommodation host also put this restaurant on the list of go-tos. It’s a fine dining restaurant, known for creating exquisite dishes representing Bolivian culture, lands, and traditions. While timing didn’t quite work out for us, I wish that it had. This restaurant is well known and absolutely worth going to!

Our Top 2 Best International Restaurants in La Paz, Bolivia

Restaurant Japonés Kenchan

Hours: 11:30am-10pm Daily
Location

We were amazed at how busy Restaurant Japonés Kenchan was, tucked away on a side street in Sopocachi. I felt lucky to even get a table with no reservation, as the place was packed! We both really enjoyed our food and also embraced eating with chopsticks again, as we used to live in Asia for almost 10 years!

I ordered the Hire Katsu Teishoku, which is a crispy pork fillet, and it came with a variety of side dishes, including miso soup. It was so tasty, and I would easily order the same thing again. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was really nice. Restaurant Japonés Kenchan was a great place to enjoy, especially if you are looking for an international cuisine that tastes great!

Kalakitas Express

Hours: Mon-Sat 12:50-9pm, Sun (closed)
Location

We were very excited to check out Kalakitas Express, a Mexican restaurant right around the corner from our apartment. We actually ordered through the Pedidos Ya app, and I was able to pick it up in 25 minutes. Our order included a burrito, tacos, and nachos. Honestly, everything was SO GOOD. Even after half a burrito, I could start to feel full haha. They were large portions, and the flavours were top-notch. I got the cilantro lime sauce on my burrito, and it was amazing.

If we were to order from here again, we would dine in at the restaurant. I say this because by the time I walked to the restaurant and came back, the food wasn’t crisp anymore. As in, the Nachos had gone a bit soft, that type of thing. So while everything tasted good, I would imagine it would be even better eating it right away at the restaurant.

Honourable Mentions: Specialty Coffee & Craft Beer Spots

Of course, when you are looking for great restaurants to eat at, you might also be on the lookout for awesome drink spots too. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

DT Brew House

Hours: 8am-11pm Daily
Location

I loved our view at DT Brew House near the Witches Market. But they also have a location near Murillo as well. We each got a flight, which was awesome to taste an IPA, lemon drop, and a few ales. While the selection wasn’t overwhelming, they had a decent selection to choose from. If you are a craft beer enthusiast, then add this place to your list!

Café Typica

Hours: 7:30am-10pm Daily
Location

Café Typica has a few locations, and it’s honestly worth going to at least once. It’s a perfect spot for nomads too, as it has a relaxing work environment. While I got my coffee to-go, I was a little sad that I missed out on ordering in at this place. It’s very relaxing and has a cute, cozy environment.

We were able to contact the restaurants via WhatsApp or book online through this portal to make a reservation.

The meals in Bolivia vary in cost, but you can anticipate purchasing snack eats for around $1-2 dollars. Higher-end restaurant meals can cost between around $10 and $20 dollars, with the highest bill we paid being around $70 for a multi-course meal with drinks.

The tap water is not safe to drink in La Paz. We drank bottled water for our 2-week stay there. They have large bottles of about 7L that you can easily pick up at the corner store or at the supermarket for about 20 BOB each.

Tipping is appreciated in Bolivia. In almost all cases, the tip is not automatically added to the bill. We would ask to add a “propina” (tip) to the bill. A standard tipping rate of about 10% is appreciated for restaurants, and about 5%-10% for cafes.

Final Thoughts on Where to Eat in La Paz, Bolivia

Bolivia is an underrated gem in South America. We absolutely loved our time exploring there and have already talked about going back! We were not prepared for the amazing culinary scene in La Paz and were blown away by the number of high-end restaurants that they have there. Every single place that we listed was incredible, and you certainly can’t go wrong! I would spend at least 4-5 days in La Paz. This will help you to acclimate to the higher elevation, but also leave you with plenty of time to explore the amazing culinary scene that they have there. There are still even a few places left on our “to visit” list after 2-weeks of being there, but I guess that just means that we’ll have to go back!
