We were always excited for our meals in Okinawa and certainly enjoyed the food scene there!
恩納そば
We were delighted to stumble upon this soba noodle restaurant on the way to our place in Onna. It was prepared very well and the pork just fell from the bone. The meat was tender and complimented the broth well. If you’re in the area, then it’s a place to consider for sure!
Kaiholo Cafe
You’ll find your way to this 2nd floor cafe about 20 minutes outside of Onna. It is just off the main road, and you’ll have a neat view of the beach from the top. This Hawaiian themed cafe has lots of menu options, of which are simple and hit the spot. In general for a breakfast meal you’re looking to spend about 500-900 JPY per person.
Lucky Tacos
This modern taco joint really hit the spot as we begun our journey to explore the Kokusai Street area. Located on the 2nd floor of the building, it is just off the main street and easy to spot! The prices are great and between the two of us we paid under 1200 JPY. We got a taco rice bowl (yum) and two tacos. The taco shells were divine and is a great place for a meal!
Regalia Okinawa (レガリア・オキナワ)
I was impressed with this three course meal, located in the Yomitan area. They have a simple lunch menu with about 6 options to choose from. Included with our lunch there was a soup, salad, and dessert! I had their pepper chicken dak galbi and it was quite delicious! Each meal came to about 1200 JPY. Although this price is a little more expensive for lunch, there was a lot included with the lunch special so we were quite satisfied.
Warren and JJ’s Place
This wonderful restaurant is tucked away from the main road and was certainly our favourite meal in Okinawa. Reservations are mandatory if you want to eat here and this is only booked through their Facebook page. This restaurant is family operated and all of their dishes are well prepared for and served with kindness. JJ tells his story on his Facebook page and he was really kind to us while we ate. We enjoyed his conversation throughout our meal and if we go back to Okinawa, we will definitely be back to eat here!
Don’t forget to purchase some beef jerky before you leave. Wow.
And for Dessert…
Beni Imo Tart
If I could give you one recommendation alone, it would be to try this dessert. It seems to be a staple of Okinawa and once you’ll see them, they will appear to be sold everywhere! Keep in mind that you’ll get the best price (usually) at the supermarket, however for convenience it might serve well to pick them up as you see them. This sweet potato dessert is simply divine and worth a try. We even had ones with cheesecake in them – need I say more?
Kit Kats
I am not normally a huge Kit Kat person, but Japan has changed that for me. I can’t believe the options that are available here, and it amazes me with the flavours that they have to choose from. If you are in Japan then check these out!
Supermarket
A great way to save money is to purchase directly from the supermarket. There many around and a quick google search will help you out to locate them. There we would load up with cool Japanese snacks and drinks.
