Colonia del Sacramento is a true gem to visit in Uruguay and absolutely worth a trip, no matter what time of year! We spent just a couple of days exploring this city while slow travelling in Uruguay. We took the bus from Montevideo each way and were impressed with how many buses are available to get to this seaside, quaint city. Spending 2 Days in Colonia Del Sacramento is a great amount of time to take in this city, especially as it’s also a quick ferry ride away from Buenos Aires. Where is Colonia del Sacramento?
Colonia del Sacramento is a quaint seaside city in the Southwestern Region of Uruguay. It’s a popular travel destination for travellers from Argentina as it’s a quick 1-hour ferry ride across the Río de la Plata from Buenos Aires. The Barrio Histórico (Historic Quarter) in Colonia del Sacramento is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and truly is worth a visit while travelling in Uruguay.
Colonia del Sacramento Weather: Tips for a Winter Visit
We travelled to Colonia del Sacramento in the peak of winter as our visit was in July of 2026. We had heard amazing things about this city during our time in Buenos Aires. Although we had already made our way to Montevideo, we ended up taking a 3-hour bus from the capital city to Colonia del Sacramento for two nights.
You can expect the winter weather to be between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius in Colonia del Sacramento. We bundled up with thermal layers as we didn’t have proper winter jackets with us. I would say that it felt more “chilly” than “cold” due to the wind and sea breeze, especially at night. The sun was out each day for our 2 days in Colonia del Sacramento, and this made it quite enjoyable to walk about this beautiful city.
I would certainly dress in layers, pack comfortable walking shoes (as the streets are made of cobblestone), and a pair of gloves (mittens) would be ideal. We spent a lot of time walking around the streets during the days, and tucked into local restaurants and pubs in the evenings!
Where to stay in Colonia del Sacramento: Best Areas & Hotels
We really enjoyed our stay at Posada Plaza Mayor, right in the heart of the Historic Quarter. This was a perfect location as we were steps away from our walking tour meeting point, close to the artisan markets and had plenty of restaurants and bars close by.
The bed was quite comfortable, the rain shower was AMAZING, and we appreciated the water cooler outside the room to fill up our water bottle each day. The decorations were simple yet stunning, and we couldn’t believe the coincidence that Ru’s sister and brother-in-law stayed at this same hotel over a decade ago! They even remembered the stunning fountain in the courtyard, and we had a laugh that by chance we were staying at the exact same hotel!
We did notice that the exhaust in the bathroom wasn’t working quite properly; however, I did not notice any other reviews regarding this, so it could have just been our room.
As Colonia del Sacramento is quite small, I don’t think it’s necessary to stay right in the middle of the historic quarter. Another possible location could be in the Centro area. There is a busy shopping street called Gral. Flores near here and could be a great option with the beach area of Playa urbana El Alamo steps away!
Lastly, I’d also recommend the Real de San Carlos area as another base while staying in Colonia del Sacramento. It is the farthest from the historic quarter, with a 15-minute driving time. The Sheraton Colonia Golf & Spa Resort and the Dazzler by Wyndham Colonia are also near this area. It has great beaches and could be a great option if you want to be a bit farther away from the tourist attractions.

There are a few main attractions that you definitely don’t want to miss while visiting for 2 days in Colonia del Sacramento.
Explore The Historic Quarter
You can’t travel to Colonia del Sacramento without spending time exploring its UNESCO site. Here you’ll see the Plaza de Armas, Calle de los Suspiros, Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse, the Field Gate, and more! I highly recommend taking these sites on a tour in order to truly understand the history in this area.
Visit a Museum
Despite being a small city, there are a number of museums that are open to go to! We were only there for two nights and missed out on the chance to go to a museum. Highly reviewed museums include the Espacio Portugués – Museo de Colonia, Museo del Origami, Municipal Museum, and Museo y Archivo Regional. Be sure to check the museum’s opening hours. Unfortunately, we had missed our opportunity to go to these, and I wish that we had!
Explore Artisan Markets
I am always up for shopping at local markets, and Colonia del Sacramento was no different!
Mercado Artesanal de Colonia is located just outside the main area of the historic quarter, but is only a few minutes’ walk away. It’s a great place to see local vendors selling things like artwork, souvenirs, and clothing items. There is also a cafe inside the building as well as a children’s play area just outside. The building itself isn’t too big, and there are about 20 sellers inside. We didn’t stay too long here, but we certainly enjoyed our visit!
Almacén La Carlota is a neat little artisan market area with just a handful of shops. We were first introduced to this while on our walking tour, but went back after to spend more time there. We enjoyed checking out the stores and seeing what they had to sell! You likely won’t spend too much time here as there are only about 5 little stores, but it’s worth checking out in my opinion!
Catch a Sunset at Muelle de Madera
The sunsets in Colonia del Sacramento are absolutely stunning! Be sure to carve out some time to catch the sunset on your visit! We loved the area at Muelle de Madera as it’s a beautiful pier with lampposts, which makes it so picturesque. Although you can catch the sunset from multiple spots, this pier is so cute, and there are a few bars/restaurants nearby with outdoor seating, making it a great place to unwind and take in the views!
Head to the Beach
Playa urbana del Rowing or Playa urbana El Alamo are great spots to enjoy a sandy beach day. We arrived in Colonia del Sacramento in the winter season (July), so it was not an ideal beach time for us. We walked past Playa urbana El Alamo, which is the smaller beach of the two. It looked like a great spot for a beach day to be enjoyed more in the summer months!
2 Days in Colonia Del Sacramento: Your Travel Itinerary
Spending 2 days is a great amount of time to take in the sights and eat local food in Colonia Del Sacramento. Despite visiting in the winter season, we truly enjoyed taking in this quaint little city, while spending the majority of our time in the historic quarter area.
Day 1: Breakfast – Colonia Sandwich Coffee Shop
Head to Colonia Sandwich Coffee Shop for a nice coffee and pastry or sandwich. It’s a cute little shop in the heart of the historic quarter, and there is even a second location nearby! We were the only ones there that morning, and we chose to sit inside due to the cooler weather. They do have seating in the sidewalk area, and that’s definitely where we’d be in the summer months!
Morning Activity: Join a Free Walking Tour
Join a walking tour in the late morning to learn more about the history of Colonia del Sacramento. We joined the Guru Free Walking Tour and really thought it was quite interesting and informative. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, and she gave us lots of insight on the history of this historic center and the Spanish and Portuguese influence this small city was under over the years. By joining the walking tour on day 1, you’ll also spot more things in the city from your tour experience, and we loved talking about the sights and things we learned from the tour afterwards!
Lunch at Bruma: A Cozy Haven
Known for its tasty pasta dishes, excellent service, and beautiful aesthetic, it’s no wonder Bruma is on the list. It has incredible reviews, and we were so disappointed that we didn’t even get a chance to try it. This restaurant was located right near our hotel, and we walked by it each day. If we had another day, this would be on the list of go-tos!
Afternoon: Head to the Beach & Go Shopping
If the weather permits, soak up the sun and sand at either Playa urbana del Rowing or Playa urbana El Alamo! I imagine that this would have been so fun! Since we went in the winter, the weather was quite cool for us to enjoy a low-key afternoon by the water.
We really enjoyed exploring the busier area of Colonia del Sacramento along the Gral. Flores Street. There are plenty of restaurants and shops along this street. We enjoyed walking through the local supermarkets to get some snacks for our hotel room. We also went to Archie’s Pizzas & Burgers to enjoy a chivito. While we appreciate the recommendation to have a chivito here, it wasn’t our favourite one – more on that for day 2!
Dinner: Traditional Uruguayan Grill at Parrillada El Portón
We had this recommendation to go to Parrillada El Portón from our hotel! Although we didn’t get here as well, it does have outstanding reviews and is especially known for its great service and grill for 2! This was a tough recommendation not to join, as this sounds like a fantastic dinner option!
Late Night Drinks at La Chopería Colonia
We felt fortunate to be in Uruguay during the FIFA World Cup in July of 2026. La Chopería Colonia was playing the matches in their bar, so this was an ideal spot for us to enjoy some beverages. They have a decent selection of craft beers, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options. It was a low-key vibe and an enjoyable atmosphere to enjoy the game. There were a few of us watching, and it was fun to be in that environment!
Day 2: Breakfast at Café Lattente UY
We loved our morning coffees at this specialty coffee cafe! They have a special menu for craft beverages, and I enjoyed a standard latte. Coffees at Café Lattente UY are a bit more expensive, but definitely worth it! They do have a few options for pastries as well, but we ended up there just for the drinks!
Morning Activity: Check Out Paseo del Arte
Before heading out on our bus back to Montevideo, we made the walk to Paseo del Arte. It’s a collection of artworks from 15 local artists, offering a new perspective on this space. It’s an open exhibit along the road, and it was really well done. It was only about a 15-minute walk from our hotel, and we were glad that we made the trip to see it!
Lunch at Chiviteria La Josefina (A True Hidden Gem!)
You can’t go to Uruguay without having a chivito. It’s a national dish of Uruguay, and it’s a style of steak sandwich. You can get different toppings at different restaurants, but the main dish consists of a bun, thin steak meat, lettuce, tomato, and a fried egg. We had the Tex-Mex version at Chiviteria La Josefina, which came with roasted peppers, roasted onion, salsa barbacoa and a plate with fries. It. was. Delicious and one of the best chivitos we have had in Uruguay! This place is a MUST!
Afternoon: Exploring the Local Artisan Markets
The Mercado Artesanal de Colonia is quite close to your lunch spot at Chiviteria La Josefina. It’s a neat place to go and see local artisan works and a perfect spot to pick up a souvenir!
We then went to Almacén La Carlota for more shopping and enjoyed seeing what other items were for sale! Both markets aren’t very big, however. It may only take a couple of hours to walk through altogether and do some shopping!
Watch the Magical Sunset
Depending on what time of year you go will depend on when you take in the sunset! We loved the viewing point at Muelle de Madera and think it’s the perfect spot to unwind, take in the seaside views, and relax with the sunset. There are a few bars and restaurants at the start of the pier that also offer nice seating options! Be sure to check this place out!
Dinner – Restaurante Amor Amor
We popped into this Restaurante Amor Amor just to view it when we were invited in to see the decor. It was fairly busy, and the aesthetic is really nice. It has great reviews and has favourite dishes including the ravioli, chivito, and milanesa.
Late Night Drinks – Cerveceria Barbot
We ended up going to Cerveceria Barbot to enjoy some excellent craft beers and watch the World Cup matches! We especially enjoyed the food here! It was honestly very filling and quite good! They have a decent selection of beers on tap, and this was a perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring!
Bonus Dinner: Poké Rainbowl (Takeout using Pedidos Ya)
We do enjoy ordering take-out and ended up ordering from Poké Rainbowl while staying in Colonia del Sacramento. This worked out well as we wanted to have some nice, clean eats and stay in the hotel room late at night. It got quite cold in the evenings, so we did enjoy dining in our hotel room. We ordered this food through the Pedidos Ya app. It’s easy to sign up and pay with a foreign credit card.
Travel Tip: Discounts are available on the app for purchases at restaurants and supermarkets, so check them out!
How to Travel From Colonia del Sacramento to Montevideo by Bus: Our Honest Review of Turil
Our trip to Colonia del Sacramento began and ended in Montevideo. We took the Turil bus each way and would honestly easily recommend this bus line! The first bus to Colonia del Sacramento was a newer bus, equipped with a phone holder, additional straps on the back of each seat (to hold things like coats and sunglasses), and even a cable charger. We didn’t expect this, and it was a great and comfortable experience! The bus back to Montevideo was an older version and didn’t have all of the bells and whistles of the previous bus.
We did also notice that the bus does oversell tickets, so some passengers will stand in the aisle (paying a smaller fare). When you do purchase tickets, you will select an assigned seat, making it easy to determine where you will sit.
Overall, the seats were quite comfortable! The bus ride did take the full three hours in each direction, and it was a smooth travel experience. The bus station in Montevideo is also huge! It’s actually a mall, and you can go shopping on multiple floors! I would recommend checking this out and carving out some time here when arriving in Montevideo!
Final Thoughts on Spending 2 Days in Colonia del Sacramento
We truly loved our visit to Colonia del Sacramento, and certainly see what the hype was about. Going on a walking tour was truly worth it to really understand the history of this area and what makes it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We were able to ask questions, learn about the Portuguese and Spanish influence on this city, and explore the historic quarter. I think that 2 days in Colonia del Sacramento is a good amount of time to take in the city while not feeling so rushed to do it all in a day trip. With easy access via ferry from Buenos Aires or a bus ride from Montevideo, it’s certainly worth the trip and should not be missed.
While we would have loved to go in the summertime to take in all of the nice sandy beaches, it’s still worth it to go in the winter. It really wasn’t busy at all! Our walking tour group only had 3 people that day, so it really felt like a private tour in the end. I would recommend bundling up a bit more. We did feel a bit unprepared with the weather as we didn’t have winter jackets with us. This would have been helpful, as it can get quite windy at times with a cool breeze.
I’m glad that we decided to make the trip to Colonia del Sacramento. Our ride to and from Montevideo was smooth, and it was really great to experience another city in Uruguay! I hope that this article is helpful in making the most of your time in Colonia del Sacramento!
