The European Christmas Markets are famous for good reason, and we were lucky enough to plan out the most amazing trip in December of 2024. Our 10-day trip was from Dec 20 to Dec 30, and it was one of the most festive Christmas experiences we have ever had. We had our sights set on building a Central Europe Christmas Market itinerary and decided to go to Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Knowing that we were going to be there both before and after Christmas really made a difference in the order of countries we visited. As some Christmas markets only run up until Christmas, we knew that we needed to visit them first.

What is amazing about visiting the European Christmas Markets is just how easy it is to travel between each of these countries. We took the train between the cities, and it made it super convenient and comfortable to get to each market. Going to the Christmas Markets in Europe is truly magical, and honestly, the atmosphere was both warm and inviting. We loved our getaway, and I hope that this article helps you make the most of your trip to these magical markets!

Route Overview & Recommended Days Per City

There are 2 main factors you should first consider when deciding your route.

  1. What are your best flight options for the start/end of your trip (to and from your home country)
  2. Which Christmas markets close before Christmas, and which are open until the first week of January

For us, flying into Vienna and flying out of Budapest was the most cost-effective route for us. We knew to visit Vienna first as their Christmas markets ended around Christmas Day. We had originally thought to end our trip in Prague, but the flight back to Malta (where we were living at the time) was very $$$.

Vienna Christmas Market Locations & Dates

I was in absolute awe when we started our Christmas Market journey. Our first stop for our Central Europe Christmas Market itinerary brought us to Vienna to visit Rathausplatz. I still remember seeing the main entrance sign and feeling so overwhelmed with joy. To be in the moment, taking in the festive spirit, was something I’ll never forget. It really set the bar high for us, and we honestly loved our time here.

During our 1-night stay, we went to the following markets:

  • Rathausplatz
  • Weihnachtsdorf Maria-Theresien-Platz
  • Weihnachtsdorf Stephansplatz

There are, of course, multiple markets here, with varying beginning and end dates. Since we knew that we wanted to go to Rathausplatz and it was ending on Dec 26, we decided to go to Vienna first. More markets in Vienna remain open past Dec 26; however, Rathausplatz was at the top of our list!

In the end, we only spent 1 night here as the hotel prices were quite high. If you can, I’d recommend spending 2 nights here, as I did feel a bit rushed in Vienna. With that said, Rathausplatz was probably my favourite Christmas market that we went to in the entire trip, so it was definitely worth the time and effort to get there. Vienna truly comes to life during the Christmas holiday season. Be sure to add it to your list as it’s filled with the festive spirit!

Best Area to Stay in Vienna (to be close to the Christmas Markets!)

I would highly recommend looking for accommodation in the Innere Stadt district (1st District). This area was perfect for us, and it’s actually where we stayed. We were able to walk everywhere that we needed to go, and the subway line is nearby too. In this area you’ll find Vienna’s Old Town, and major attractions like Stadtpark, Stephansplatz and Vienna’s City Hall. Rathausplatz is located at City Hall, and trust me when I say you will want to be here for the Christmas Market!

Vienna Hotel Recommendations

1. Hotel Pension Lumes – Self Check-In

Hotel Pension Lumes is where we stayed for our 1-night stay in Vienna. To be honest, our main factor for booking here was the price. Hotels in Vienna can be quite expensive in December, so in the end we only stayed one night. We only needed a basic room for our short stay, and so this hotel pension worked well for us. Based on the photos, I believe it’s also been updated since our stay too! It didn’t have all the bells and whistles that other hotels do, but we were very content with this room in this general location. We did have to wait a few minutes upon check-in, but after that we were all sorted. We spent very little time in the room as most of our time was spent at the Christmas Markets!!

2. Elaya Hotel Vienna City Center, Trademark by Wyndham

Elaya Hotel is such a beautiful hotel and is located right next to the famous Rathausplatz Christmas Market. What I love most about this hotel is the musical flair in some of the rooms. The piano key headboard is a showstopper, and I love the modern look and feel that this hotel has. If you are looking for a hotel right next to the most magical Christmas Market in Vienna (in my humble opinion), then I’d recommend looking this way. The hotel is in the perfect spot to head to the market and come back to relax. I’d recommend this hotel for couples or solo travellers looking for a beautiful and upscale hotel to complement their time at the markets!

Vienna Itinerary Highlights

  • Wiener Christkindlmarkt (Rathausplatz): This honestly was my favourite Christmas market of our entire trip! I don’t know if it being the first one was a factor or not, but it truly felt so magical! I loved seeing the City Hall building, the decorated festive wooden huts, and the singing carolers!
  • Collection Mugs: If you are looking to drink some festive punch (Weihnachtspunsch) or Glühwein, then you just might be overjoyed that it comes in a special Christmas mug. You’ll pay a small deposit for the ceramic mug, and then you can decide if you want to keep it or return it to get your deposit back. We actually kept 1 mug from here, and I love it as a souvenir!!
  • Christmas Magic Schwarzenbergplatz (NEW IN 2026!): A new location has been added this year in 2026, entitled Christmas Magic! It features the Hochstrahlbrunnen fountain and promises to have festive light installations, arts and crafts, gastronomy, and a program for all ages!

Bratislava Christmas Market and Dates

Bratislava is an underrated city, and certainly worth a visit on your Christmas Market Tour. It’s a small city with 2 Christmas markets, and we honestly loved our time here. One of the Christmas markets even had a small Christmas tree maze and a small slide for kids.

The two markets are a short distance from each other, so you could easily go to both within one day. In the end, we spent 1 night in Bratislava and felt that this was sufficient time to enjoy both Christmas markets. We honestly did not do much sightseeing in the city, so I would tack on another day if you want to explore the sights as well.

The Christmas markets felt very quaint. They weren’t too busy during the day, but in the evening it really they really came alive. It was a very enjoyable atmosphere walking around to the different stalls and seeing what festive eats and drinks that we could find! Be sure to add Bratislava to your Central Europe Christmas Market Itinerary!

Best Area to Stay in Bratislava (to be close to the Christmas Markets!)

Staying in the Old Town is exactly where you’ll want to be in Bratislava. We took a Bolt Taxi from the train station, and it was only about a 10-minute ride and cost a few Euros. The Hviezdoslav Square Christmas Market was right outside our hotel and worked out quite well. It was only another 5 or so minutes to the Main Square Christmas Market as well.

Bratislava Hotel Recommendations

1. Park Inn by Radisson Danube Bratislava

We stayed at Park Inn by Radisson Danube Bratislava and thought that it was great! They had a fruit punch stand for guests, which was great for us while we checked in. The hotel was a bit busy, and we had a small wait line when we arrived. The room, however, was very clean and perfect for us. The bed was very comfortable, and we thought the unique decor added charm to it. It was only a one-night stay, but the hotel location simply can’t be beat. This hotel is perfect for travellers who want to be steps from the Christmas markets and enjoy having a unique room style to come back to!

2. Marrol’s Boutique Hotel

Marrol’s Boutique Hotel is where you’ll want to book if you are looking for a 5-Star experience. It’s also in a great location, being only about a 5-minute walk to the Christmas markets. We are always on the lookout for Boutique Hotels, and I do love the atmosphere of this place. The rooms are large, charming, and certainly would be a comfortable place to unwind after a day exploring the Christmas markets. They also have SPA services that can be booked, as well as an in-house restaurant to dine at. I’d recommend this hotel for couples and solo travellers who want to upgrade their trip for a 5-Star Christmas escape!

Bratislava Itinerary Highlights

  • Hlavné (Main Square) and Hviezdoslavov Squares: With only a few minutes’ walking distance between these two squares, this is easily where you’ll spend most of your time!
  • Ride the Christmas Tram: Did you know that you can ride the Christmas Tram for free in Bratislava? It journeys through a special loop in the city and runs every half hour. Although I loved seeing the Christmas tram up close, I wish we had done this!!

Prague Christmas Markets and Dates

We spent the peak of our Christmas Market trip in Prague. We were there from Dec 22-26, covering Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Prague felt like a magical city to spend time at the Christmas Markets, and it was quite a different atmosphere after travelling from Bratislava. The main Christmas Market is at the Old Town Square, which was transformed into a market, with a large Christmas Tree in the center. It was soooo beautiful! Even just walking around at night with the beautiful architecture all lit up really added to the enjoyable and relaxing ambiance. There are a number of markets around Prague, which made it fun to explore the different ones, trying different festive mulled wines and treats!

We stayed in the Old Town, and we loved our location. We were steps away from the Old Town Christmas Market and the Wenceslas Square Market, as well. This area was super convenient for taking in the city and simply walking around. It was great to be able to enjoy the markets and then slip back into the room to have some downtime. I would highly recommend staying in this area. You are steps from the major markets and have so many things to do nearby!!

Prague Accommodation Recommendations

1. 4 Arts Apartments by Adrez

We stayed at 4 Arts Apartments by Adrez, and felt that it was great value for money. It was so nice to book an apartment for our 4-night stay, as we then had the opportunity to have a place with a bit more space. We booked the studio apartment (Amadeus), and it was great for us. The bed was comfortable; we had a small seating area and a small kitchen area too. It’s in a perfect location in Old Town and was just a few minutes’ walk away from the two main Christmas markets. It was quite busy in this area, but we didn’t mind as we loved being in the midst of it all!

2. Quentin Prague Hotel

Quentin Prague Hotel is a beautiful, modern hotel that is located less than 10 minutes walking distance from the Old Town Square. The room designs have a sleek, rustic feel with wooden desks in the room. I always appreciate a bathroom that includes a towel heater and one that has a large bathroom vanity. It just makes things easier to have space for our bathroom toiletries and can quickly dry our towels. Yes, these things are bonuses, especially the older we get (or is this just me??). I’d recommend this hotel if you are looking for a great spot near the action, but don’t need the larger space of an apartment!

  • Go Ice Skating: Make the most of the winter activities and visit one of these ice rinks for a magical winter skate!
  • Watch the Prague Astronomical Clock: Located at the Old Town Square, you’ll see a HUGE crowd gathering near the base of this landmark to witness the clock come to life on the hour, every hour!

Budapest Christmas Markets and Dates

We ended our Christmas Market journey in Budapest, and couldn’t have asked for a better Christmas Market to end our experience with. Budapest was very busy, and there were so many things to do in the city! Even though we had a few days here, there are so many more activities that I wish we had gotten to. The city feels unique in and of itself. From seeing the Parliament building up close, to heading to a ruin bar, to attending the Christmas markets, of course, there are so many things to do! Budapest was such a fun city to be in, and I loved our time here.

The Christmas Markets they had were still pretty busy even after Christmas Day. We were here from Boxing Day on the 26th until the 30th. While the Christmas markets themselves aren’t huge, the city has so many things to do that you can easily spend a few days here. My favourite Christmas market was the Basilica Christmas Market. I loved seeing the large light tree in the middle of the market with all sorts of food and drink stalls around!

Best Area to Stay in Budapest (to be close to the Christmas Markets!)

Budapest is an incredible city to visit, and staying in District V will give you the closest proximity to the Christmas markets. You’ll only need to walk about 5-10 minutes to reach the most famous Christmas markets there! We stayed in District VI (on the border with District V) and had only a slightly longer walk to reach the markets. Both of these locations work well for your time in Budapest. There are so many things to do beyond the Christmas markets there, and we had an incredible time.

Budapest Accommodation Recommendations

1. TWENTYSEVEN Boutique

As you might already know, we love a good boutique hotel. TWENTYSEVEN Boutique has lovely rooms with stylish, unique decor. The bathroom is such a standout feature for me, and I think it would be such a fun place to stay in Budapest. Another special thing about this boutique hotel is that it is located in District V and is steps away from the Basilica Christmas Market! I’d recommend this hotel for travellers who want a unique and luxurious accommodation experience, close to the Christmas market action!

2. Vagabond Downtown

We loved our accommodation at the Vagabond Downtown, and this is where we stayed. We rented a studio apartment for our 4-night stay and appreciated the extra space we had inside the room. This especially worked well as I was under the weather for a short time too. The Vagabond Downtown is part of an open apartment complex area, almost like a motel where the room doors are on the outside of the building. The bottom level has some neat restaurants, which we did go to as well. I’ll be honest, it was slightly confusing at first how to find our unit. However, in the end it didn’t take too long, and before we knew it, we were inside our apartment! I would absolutely recommend the Vagabond Downtown apartments. Great for travellers who want good value for money, and it’s still only a 10-minute walk to the major Christmas markets!

Budapest Itinerary Highlights

  • Visit the Basilica Christmas Market & The Vörösmarty Square Market: These two markets are incredible, and we especially loved seeing the iconic red tree at the Basilica Christmas Market and the 3D light projection show on the Church as well! The light show happens every half hour after dark!
  • Winter Thermal Baths: This would have been so fun, and I wish we had gone to one of these. Hungary is known for their winter thermal baths. I was a bit under the weather, so unfortunately we had to skip this.
  • Skate at the City Park Ice Rink: This rink is one of the largest in Europe, and would be so magical to skate at while you’re in Budapest!
  • Go to a Ruin Bar: Ruin Bars are unique to Budapest and worth going to for the experience alone!

FAQs About Central Europe Christmas Markets

Where are the best Christmas Markets in Europe?

This answer will be unique to everyone and is completely subjective. Apart from this trip, the only other Christmas market that I have been to was in Berlin. For me, my favourite Christmas market was in Vienna at Rathausplatz. It was the first Christmas market on this trip, and it was truly amazing. I’d give the “Hidden Gem ” Market award to Bratislava. It’s so quaint and beautiful, so it felt quite special. Lastly, Budapest holds a special place in my heart. The city is amazing, and we enjoyed not only the markets, but exploring the city itself!

Does Slovakia have Christmas Markets?

Of course it does! The two markets in Bratislava were the smallest on this trip. In that way, they felt so special. It wasn’t busy with tourists, and we loved our time there! Read my full guide of my experience visiting the Bratislava Christmas Markets and what you can expect from visiting there!

How to Dress for European Christmas Markets?

The Christmas markets in Europe are in the middle of winter and thus are quite cold. We bundled up every day with a winter hat, mitts, winter jacket, thermal layers and boots. The Christmas markets are held outside, so you’ll want to bundle up with winter gear!

How to Visit the European Christmas Markets?

The best way to travel between the different countries that have the Christmas markets is to take the train. The trains are very affordable, comfortable, and easy to take. You’ll arrive close to the city center at each destination, and you don’t have the hassle of navigating through any airports!

When do the European Christmas Markets Start?

Each Christmas market has its own start date (even within the same city). Generally speaking, the Christmas markets begin towards the end of November. Be sure to double-check the city website links to see the Christmas market dates!

When do the European Christmas Markets End?

The Christmas markets end typically around Christmas Day or into the first week of January. Each Christmas market ends at a different time, so you’ll need to check back with the city websites before booking your trip! We knew that the main Vienna Christmas Market ended around Christmas, so we chose to go there first. This year in 2026, the Bratislava Christmas markets are closed on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day, so be sure to plan accordingly!

Where are the Best European Christmas Market Mugs?

It’s so fun to see all of the different European Christmas Market Mugs! For us, Vienna had the best mugs we found. We kept one of ours as a souvenir from the Rathausplatz Christmas Market. I also loved the little boot one from the Stephansplatz Christmas Market as well. I have, though, seen really neat ones from Germany and online from Luxembourg too! Note that not all Christmas markets have the collectible mugs. Many of the markets we went to actually served their hot beverages in paper cups!

Final Thoughts On Our Central Europe Christmas Market Itinerary

I loved this trip, and it truly was one of the most magical Christmas experiences that I have had! Our route wasn’t the most direct, I’ll admit, but it made the most sense for us. We were balancing flight costs for the start and end of our trip. We also wanted to attend the Christmas markets first that closed by Christmas Day. Our Central Europe Christmas Market Itinerary was so fun to put together, and honestly, taking the train was a breeze. We had relaxing travel days and did work on the train. The train costs between the countries were quite reasonable, and it’s amazing to be able to travel to 4 countries on this trip! I hope that our experience helps offer insight into planning this type of trip and that you have a magical Christmas Market experience!
