Essential Bavarian Eats: Must-Try Dishes in Munich
Tegernseer Tal – Bräuhaus

This brewhouse is easily our favourite and the place we keep coming back to EVERY VISIT. We enjoy a traditional Bavarian breakfast here, known as The Weisswurst Breakfast.
A Weisswurst Breakfast includes Weisswurst (veal, white sausages), a pretzel, sweet mustard, and wheat beer.
Recommendation: Be sure to remove the Weisswurst casing before eating it for a more enjoyable dish.
Obatzda

Obatzda was often part of a food pairing with a stein anytime we were at a beer garden. Eaten alongside a pretzel, it’s easy to see why it’s a staple.
Obatzda is a combination of cheese, cream cheese, butter, spices and beer.
Recommendation: When you head to a beer garden, be sure to order a pretzel and obatzda as well!
Schweinshaxe

Be sure to add a Schweinshaxe to the list of dishes to try while visiting Munich!
Our friend ordered this local favourite while we were visiting Hofbräuhaus München, to have some local food and beer!
A Schweinshaxe is a roasted pork knuckle that is typically served with a Semmelknödel (bread dumpling) or kartoffelknödel (potato dumpling).
A great dish to try while visiting Munich!
Sauerbraten

Sauerbraten was another dish we enjoyed while visiting Munich!
Sauerbraten is a roast that is typically served with Semmelknödel, which is a bread dumpling and gravy.
We also ordered this from Hofbräuhaus München, and overall, I highly recommend this dish!
Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut und Kartoffelpüree

Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut und Kartoffelpüree is a great dish to enjoy while eating in Munich!
Specifically, this dish we ordered is from Löwenbräukeller – Das Original in Munich. On the English menu, it’s listed as “Grilled Sausages Munich Style”.
In general, this dish is comprised of grilled sausages, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes.
This dish at Löwenbräukeller – Das Original in Munich was amazing, and it’s certainly worth ordering!
Where to Eat and Drink in Munich: The Beer Garden & Beer Hall Experience
Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm
Hours: 10am Mon-Fri, 11am Sat & Sun during warm, dry weather.
Vibe: Relaxed, nature, social
The Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm is a famous beer garden located near the Chinese Tower. This location is a favourite of ours as we love the social vibe and relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
I believe it is also the second biggest beer garden in Munich, and live music is also played here, typically in the afternoon 4 times a week. Check out their website to find out the times!
Recommendations: Be sure to try their homemade obatza here!
Viktualienmarkt Beergarden
Hours: 10am-10pm Mon-Sat. Closed on Sundays.
Vibe: Busy, touristy
Viktualienmarkt Beergarden is conveniently located in the heart of Munich, near the bustling Marienplatz. It’s a neat place to go and check out while you are in the area, to sit and enjoy local snacks and drinks.
While we were happy to check this place out, it did feel very busy and quite touristy, thus not quite capturing the same relaxed beer garden vibe that we found in other places.
Recommendation: Only check it out if you’re already in the area; otherwise, head onwards to other beer gardens!
Wirtshaus am Bavariapark
Hours: 12pm-12am Daily
Vibe: Local, relaxed

Wirtshaus am Bavariapark has quite a nice vibe and is much smaller than Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm. It is both a restaurant and a beer garden, making it a great place to go no matter the weather! They also have gluten-free options, including gluten-free pretzels and gluten-free beer!
It is located away from the main hub in Munich, but definitely worth a visit if you have the time!
Recommendation: Try their Augustiner beer on tap!
Weisses Bräuhaus im Tal
Hours: 9:00 am -11:30 pm Daily
Vibe: Busy, friendly

Weisses Bräuhaus im Tal is an authentic Bavarian restaurant located in the heart of the city near the famous Marienplatz area. It’s over 150 years old, and It’s a great place to enjoy Bavarian dishes!
We ordered the roasted pork sausages served on sauerkruat and paired them with a local beer.
Truly a great place to go to if you are exploring the city!
Hofbräukeller
Hours: 11am-11pm Daily
Vibe: Busy, local

Hofbräukeller is a Bavarian restaurant and beer garden, and a great place to check out for more of a local atmosphere! Not too far away from the main city center, it is a very popular spot!
Reviews noted this spot feels less busy and has more of a local atmosphere than Hofbräuhaus.
Depending on when you go, you might need to call for a reservation.
Augustiner Biergarten (Augustiner-Keller)
Hours: 10am-12am Daily
Vibe: Social, relaxed

The Augustiner Biergarten is in a prime location right next to Munich Central Station. The Augustiner-Keller Beer Hall is connected as well, making it a great spot to be – no matter the weather.
Recommendation: If you visit during the winter months, be sure to check out their outdoor curling rinks! And check out their beer cellar too!
Hofbräuhaus München

Vibe: Lively, touristy

Hofbräuhaus München is a famous Bavarian restaurant and beer hall, with a beer garden as well, located in the heart of Munich. It opened to the public in the 1800’s and continues to this day. Munich Travel Tips: Things I Wish I Knew
Walking Along Isar River
Without a doubt, one of our favourite things to do in Munich is grab a drink at Kiosk Reichenbachbrücke GmbH and walk along the Isar River. This is a truly local experience, and you’ll find it so relaxing! Although we enjoy checking out the different beer gardens in the city, there is just something special about this walk. You’ll get to see so many dogs, and it’s a nice rural environment near the city center.
Munich’s Beer Halls and Breweries Tour
We are certainly lucky to have a good friend living in Munich. We have been to spots all over the city, thanks to his local knowledge and expertise!
