We had the best time exploring San Telmo in the spring of 2026. We stayed in San Telmo for almost 2 months, and we absolutely loved our time there. There is so much to explore in this neighbourhood, and we soon began searching for our favourite local spots, and wow, this area does not disappoint. Although San Telmo has a famous Mercado filled with many neat places to eat, we often found ourselves dining out of the main tourist hub.
We did have to get used to the late dining hour, as many restaurants don’t reopen for dinner until at least 7 pm; however, we just knew we had to adapt to our environment. There are so many awesome true gems in San Telmo that this is the place to be for awesome local eats. If you’re planning a trip to San Telmo and wondering where to eat? Then this article is for you!

The Best Argentine Spots You Can’t Miss
1. Desnivel: The Best Parrilla in San Telmo (Our Personal Favourite!)

Desnivel is everything you want when looking for a night out to try local food. For us, it was the best food we had in San Telmo! It has authentic roots, a wide selection of local dishes, and the meat cuts are so good! We never had a bad meal here, and it’s easily our favourite. We even dined here on a Sunday, during the San Telmo market, and it was packed. They still had ample seating, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
We actually heard about Desnivel from Ru’s sister. They had been to this same restaurant over a decade ago and recommended that we try it. Of course, being the great listeners that we are, we decided to give it a go. And well, we came back again and again and even saved this place for our last date night out in San Telmo before we left for Uruguay.
We have tried a few dishes and even brought Ru’s cousin to join us for dinner here, and it was the best steak she had in Argentina. I can’t say this enough – please do yourself a favour and dine at Desnivel!

2. La Brigada: Iconic San Telmo Steakhouse (A Close Second!)

La Brigada was also high on our list when we were looking to discover the best restaurant in San Telmo. It has a lovely local atmosphere, and the decor is full of its history. The night we went was busy; however, we still managed to get a table despite not having a reservation. They even have a valet service here, so it tells you just how busy it can get!
We loved our meal here and enjoyed a steak, milanesa and papa puree (mashed potatoes) with a bottle of wine. Everything tasted so good, and the service was incredible. We didn’t end up finishing our bottle of wine, so we were even able to take the bottle home with us! Our dining experience here was honestly amazing, and it takes a close second place for us as our favourite restaurant in San Telmo.

3. Pedro Telmo Pizzeria (Close to the Mercado + Authentic Local Spot)

Pedro Telmo Pizzeria is another local favourite not to be missed. Although known for their pizza, we decided to order milanesa and ojo de bife (our classic go-to meal haha). Our meal had great value for money, and it tasted so good! We went during lunchtime, and it wasn’t busy at all. This was another place we took Ru’s cousin to. Although the meat here wasn’t her favourite compared to Desnival’s, the milanesa was honestly top-notch.
The atmosphere here is also really unique, and it definitely has a local charm! They have a feature wall with many different banners of football teams, along with a mural, pictures, and scarves of football players and teams as well. If you are a big football (soccer) fan, then you’ll want to go here!
They have since updated their menu, and I’m not sure if they still serve the dishes that we ordered, but nonetheless, try their famous Argentine local pizza!
Recommended Dish: Fugazzeta Pizza (cheesy onion pizza)
4. Bar El Federal (Authentic Pub with Local Eats)

Bar El Federal has an amazing local feel and truly is another great place to enjoy Argentine food. Although it’s a bar, I’m adding it to this list because the food was that good. This place always seems to be busy when opened and we were so glad to finally try it when we did!
We had the Guiso de Lentejas, which is a winter warm stew. It includes chorizo, beef, carrots, green onion, and lentils, and it’s one of my favourites. We enjoyed this with a bottle of wine, and it is definitely one of the best spots we went to. It has a more relaxed atmosphere than the restaurants above, and truly feels like a true gem. So if you are looking for a more casual environment with great local eats, then this is where you’ll want to go!
Recommended Dish: Guiso de Lentejas! (This could be seasonal – if it’s on the menu, give it a go!)
Best Restaurants with Unique Vibes & Neighbourhood Charm
5. Grapin (New Local Favourite Date Night Spot!)

We loved our time at Grapin and finally went there in our last week in San Telmo. It’s the perfect date night spot, and I wish I could go back. The ambiance inside feels cozy, elegant, and relaxing all at the same time.
We went in the evening, overlapping the happy hour special, which runs from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. We ordered an appetizer and two main dishes. I ordered the gnocchi pasta dish and it was honestly so good. The service was amazing, and it was one of our favourite dining experiences in San Telmo!

6. La Choripanería (Our Designated Choripan Go-To Spot!)

The Mercado de San Telmo is a famous spot in San Telmo and is certainly worth checking out, in and of itself. It has many food stalls, restaurants and shops inside! And one of those places is the infamous La Choripanería. Here, you’ll find choripans, which are a staple in Argentina that typically consist of a chorizo sausage topped with chimichurri and a bun. At La Choripanería, they have many different versions of the chorizo to choose from, which is pretty unique.
They actually have 3 locations inside the Mercado de San Telmo, with the most popular being right in the middle of the market. There are about 20 bar stools lined up around their stall, and it’s literally always busy! If you travel up the stairs from the main market area into one of the halls, then you’ll see their other main restaurant and empanada shop there. One busy Sunday afternoon (during the market), we actually sat in the empanada shop side and ordered our chiropans there! This worked out well as it wasn’t crazy busy and we still got our food quickly!
I did stick with the regular order and only tried one other style of chiropan. However, I will say that I have tried having choripans at many different places, and La Choripanería still remains the BEST!
Recommendation: Solapa (regular) & Gaucho (with provolone cheese & grilled pepper)
7. Valhalla (Unique Resto Bar Worth a Visit!)

Without a doubt, Valhalla had the most unique environment out of all the places on this list. It’s a Viking-themed bar, and the decor is top-notch for this. While it’s known for being a bar, I’m adding it to the list as we also really enjoyed the pub-style food. We ordered the Papas Germanada (Hungaria), and it was such a great late-night bite. If you have some extra time and are looking for a unique spot to eat, then be sure to go here!

8. Che Taco (Favourite Mexican Food Spot)

Although we typically dined out at local restaurants in San Telmo, we decided to give Che Taco a try as it was quite close to our apartment. The decor is really neat, and the Mexican food was SO GOOD. I was so happy we tried coming here. I ordered one of their XXL burritos, and Ru had the enchiladas. We also topped off our meals with drinks, and I had a margarita, which was tasty!. Overall, it was awesome and tasted great! If you are looking for an international cuisine in Argentina, then check out Che Taco!

9. Estación Colombia Restaurante (Awesome Empanadas!)
Hours: Wednesday – Saturday 9:00am – 11:30pm (closed on Monday & Tuesday)

Although we walked past Estación Colombia almost daily (as it’s located right next to Mercado de San Telmo) finally ate there towards the end of our stay. It’s a cute and cozy restaurant, with only a handful of seats inside. They do have a patio area; however, it was a little cool for the temperature, so we didn’t sit outside. The food was really good, and we had the shredded beef patacones and the Hawaiian empanadas. It was the first time we ever had Hawaiian empanadas, and we were so glad that we tried them. Honestly, a great choice if you want a small bite of Colombian food!
Recommendation: Try their Hawaiian empanadas!
10. La Birra Bar (Our Go-To Burger Place!)
Hours: Sunday – Thursday 12pm – 12am (except Monday), Friday & Saturday 12pm – 1am, Monday 6pm – 12am
Location
La Birra Bar ended up being our go-to burger place in San Telmo. They are an award-winning burger joint in international competitions. They have a variety of themed burgers and are especially known for their Dubai Burger. What was extra cool about this place is that they had multiple discounts on the Pedidos food delivery app. We would find 2-for-1 deals on burgers, so we made the most of this on a few occasions. It’s a cool restaurant to dine at, and we also ate at home a few different times. If you’re looking for a good burger spot, then this is it!
Recommendation: Try their Dubai Burger!
Best Bakery in San Telmo (A True Hidden Gem)
Cosas Ricas

Cosas Ricas has amazing pastries and local dessert snacks that you’ll certainly want to try when visiting San Telmo! We came across this bakery, love the local charm it has, and it is one of the best hidden gems we found in San Telmo!
We tried a few things from here, but by far my favourite is the alfajor de maicena. Think of it like a shortbread cookie sandwich with a dulce de leche middle, and a crusting of shredded white coconut around the filling. You can purchase them as a single large alfajor de maicena, or can get a few small ones. Now I do typically avoid sugar; however, this is one of a few exceptions haha!
FAQs About Where to Eat in San Telmo
Is San Telmo safe to walk around for dinner at night?
We stayed in San Telmo for 2 months and frequently walked around at night. We had no issues during our stay; however, we were diligent while walking around by always having our phones tucked away. There are so many restaurants and bars near Calle Defensa and Calle Bolivar, so more people will be in this area. Overall, we both felt safe and enjoyed exploring San Telmo both during the days and evenings!
Do you need reservations for restaurants like Desnivel or La Brigada?
The only time we ever had an issue going to Desnivel was during the San Telmo Sunday Market, as it was swamped. There was a long line, and we were informed that they do not take reservations that day. If you do want to go to Desnivel on a Sunday, be sure to go earlier around lunchtime. They have tons of seating, and you’ll be more likely to be seated quickly earlier in the day.
Although we didn’t make a reservation at La Brigada, I would recommend it. It’s a smaller venue than Desnivel, and we felt lucky to have gotten a table. They even have valet parking, which was a surprise to us. If you really want to dine at La Brigada, then be sure to make a reservation just in case!
Is the Mercado de San Telmo worth visiting for food?
I think if you are in San Telmo, then visiting the Mercado is a MUST. It’s a really neat building, and we enjoyed exploring it multiple times. My favourite choripan is found inside there at La Choripanaria, so I would recommend going inside just for that. However, I don’t think it’s the best place overall to eat. They do have great restaurants, and it’s worth checking out; however, San Telmo has so many amazing restaurants to eat at within the city too.
